leadership matters
times larger than full-time employees who
work at home half-time or more.
In Canada, specifically, more than 1.7
million employees worked from home in
2008 at least one day a week, up almost 23
per cent from 1.4 million in 2000, accord-ing
to the most recent Statistics Canada
report in 2010.
Canadian Business magazine reports
over 70 per cent of full-time workers aged
18 to 29 would be more satisfied in their
jobs if they could work remotely using
cloud software. Over 60 per cent of full-time
workers aged 30 to 39 and 40 to 49
reported the same.
There is no denying the demand
for remote and flex work is increasing.
Organizations will not be able to attract
and retain the best talent if they do not
continue to listen and respond to these
changing new market standards and ex-pectations
– and HR plays a key role in
facilitating the appropriate responses to
this reality.
HR business partners need to stra-tegically
evaluate how they can assist
their organizations to support the prac-tice
of flexible, mobile workers. Is the
work being performed conducive to this
practice? What are the set of principles
from which the organization should es-tablish
to support this practice? What
are the best tools to maintain commu-nication
and engagement with remote
employees? What changes are neces-sary
to existing policies – specifically
technology policies – in light of more
workers operating remotely? How do
processes need to adapt for managing
and supporting a worker’s time, atten-dance
and performance results?
These are just an example of the
key questions for consideration –
and HR practitioners with their
business-oriented and strategic skill set
are up for the challenge. n
