letter from the editor
Welcome to 2018!
Happy New Year! I’m excited to begin a new year of HR
Professional issues with you.
I’ve been looking forward to this edition, in particular,
as the theme is so important, especially to HR profes-sionals.
We’re exploring “Beyond Diversity,” which is to say that of
the “diversity and inclusion” conversation that has been so rightly
prevalent in the past few years, we’re now focusing on the inclu-sion
aspect of the equation. In our three feature articles, explore
Indigenous inclusion in Canadian business, Deloitte’s Outcomes
Over Optics report and an interview with a prestigious NYU pro-fessor
on the concept of “covering” in the workplace. That feature
section begins on page 16.
In the other articles in this issue, read through some practical
tips and ideas to get your year started on the right path. Learn
about how to enhance employee wellness in 2018, how to give em-ployees
purpose, how to rethink the interview process and ways in
which you can make your small business seem more appealing to
top talent than your large corporate counterparts. I hope you find
something that resonates with you!
Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn’t remind you that the HRPA
2018 Annual Conference is just around the corner, beginning on
Jan. 31. This will be my fifth time attending this amazing event, and
I highly recommend attending. The line-up of keynote speakers
and session presentations, not to mention the hundreds of incred-ible
companies exhibiting in the trade show, is especially incredible
this year. Visit hrpaconference.ca to learn more and to register. I
can’t wait to meet more of our readers this year. Remember to pick
up an exclusive copy of the HR Professional Conference Edition
while you’re there! It’s the only issue that we print each year, and
the entire issue is dedicated to exploring the Future of Work and
the Intelligence Revolution.
In addition to the special Conference Edition, we’ll also be
back in February with another regularly scheduled issue of HR
Professional, and we’ll be talking compensation.
Happy reading,
Jill Harris n
