Once upon a time, a few senior leaders from our CHRO
council had an idea.
The practice of HR has been framed as everything from
administrative, procedural, bureaucratic, strategic and
tactical. HR professionals play many roles: business partner, risk
manager, confidant, strategy setter, therapist, innovator, advisor.
But how about storyteller?
The idea came about to discuss this less considered role: how
does HR shape the narrative of organizations? Of culture?
How can HR fully leverage its role as storyteller to craft a com-pelling
employer brand and an exceptional value proposition
– both for internal stakeholders (employees) and external ones?
In this issue you’ll read in our cover feature on page 18 about the
transformative power of storytelling on culture and motivation, as
well as the science behind storytelling. In our second feature, on
page 24, you’ll read about the vast potential for synergies between
the HR function and the marketing function.
This issue theme is perhaps the one I was most excited about on
our 2018 editorial calendar, and I hope it sparks some thought and
conversation about HR storytelling in your organization.
On that note, I am a bit wistful to say that I’ll be closing a chap-ter
of my own, as I depart HR Professional and HRPA to pursue
a new opportunity. I will turn this space over to the most capa-ble
hands of our publisher, Jill Harris, and editor, Lindsay Risto,
from the December issue onward – and I know they will continue
to deliver the outstanding content HR Professional is known for.
