letter from the editor
Everything,
Interrupted
The Greek philosopher Heraclitus said that the only thing
constant in life is change, and that’s certainly still ringing
true today. In our age of digital disruption, it seems those
changes have been moving at warp-speed. We especially
feel the effects of these shifts in the business world, and that comes
with additional roles and responsibilities for HR.
In this issue’s cover feature, “HR, Interrupted”, HRPA’s Liz
Bernier writes about Dave Ulrich’s presentation to 60 CHROs
during the annual CHRO Conference this year in Toronto.
Ulrich, recently named the most influential HR thinker of the decade
by HR Magazine, spoke about how disruption in the status
quo will change the entire HR function. It’s a fascinating article,
and it starts on page 18.
Our second feature, “Economy, Interrupted”, examines how the
HR function can best add value to organizations during times of
economic uncertainty. Writer Melissa Campeau spoke to a number
of HR professionals who have experienced cutbacks and downsizing,
and they offered their advice and opinions on HR’s changing
role during these critical times. That article starts on page 22.
I can’t talk about disruptions without mentioning the digital
shift we implemented this year with HR Professional magazine. As
we move into the second half of the year, our metrics are clearly
showing that readers are becoming more comfortable with the
new platform. Be sure to read your HRPA newsletters and connect
with HRPA and HR Professional on social media so that you’re
always aware when a new issue is live on HRProfessionalNow.ca.
For those of you looking for products or services for your organization,
be sure to use the HRPA Suppliers’ Guide, also now on
HRProfessionalNow.ca.
As always, I’m looking forward to your thoughts and feedback
on this issue and on HR Professional in general.
Happy reading,
Jill Harris
